Mattoso C.R.S., Catenacci L.S., Beier S.L., Lopes R.S. & Takahira R.K. 2012. Hematologic, serum biochemistry and urinary values for captive Crab-eating Fox (Cerdocyon thous) in São Paulo state, Brazil. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 32(6):559-566. Laboratório Clínico Veterinário, Departamento de Clínica Veterinária, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Campus de Botucatu, Distrito de Rubião Junior s/n, Botucatu, SP 18618-970, Brazil. E-mail: [email protected] The importance of studies with hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values of Crab-eating Fox (Cerdocyon thous) is based on the need for health care and maintenance of those populations. This paper has the objective to investigate hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary physiological parameters of the Crab-eating fox, comparing gender and age differences. Blood samples were collected in 2003 from 52 animals of different Zoos in São Paulo state, Brazil; 7mL of blood was used to obtain a complete blood cell count (CBC) and the pro ile of the serum biochemistry. Moreover, 5mL of urine were collected for analysis. There was no difference in values for male and female animals, as for the CBC and serum biochemistry. Some hematological and serum biochemical parameters were in luenced by age, showing signi icant differences. Urinalysis results were just demonstrated in a descriptive form. The studied values were, RBC 4.35+0.73 x 10 /μL, WBC 7.72+3.66 x 10 /μL (predominance of segmented neutrophils), platelets 227.06+111.58 x 10 /μL, urea 43.06+14.28mg/dL and creatinine 1.03+0.24mg/dL. Hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values obtained in this study can be used as physiological values of the captive Crab-eating Fox. It is possible to conclude that wild species need their own reference values, differentiating animals in captivity from free-ranging animals.

Rabies Virus Related to Vampire Bats (Desmodus rotundus) Isolated from a Crab-Eating Fox (Cerdocyon thous) in Southeast Brazil

In this study, rabies virus was isolated from a naturally infected crab-eating fox [Cerdocyon thous] in a rural area of São Paulo State, Brazil. The sample was positive for the standard techniques used for rabies diagnosis. The isolate was antigenically characterized using anti-nucleoprotein monoclonal antibodies. Studies on molecular epidemiology by patterns of nucleotide substitution in the n...

Malignant insulinoma in a crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous)

This report describes a case of insulin-secreting pancreatic beta cell carcinoma in a crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous). The animal died approximately 60 days after the first clinical signs. At necropsy, a nodule (2 x 3 cm) was observed in the pancreas. Microscopic features were consistent with a pancreatic islet cell carcinoma. By immunohistochemistry, neoplastic cells were strongly positive f...

Canine distemper infection in crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) from Argentina.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) has been reported worldwide in wild carnivores and has been cited as the cause of population declines in some species. Crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) from El Palmar National Park, Argentina, were observed either dead or exhibiting clinical neurologic signs. Samples were taken from two individuals that were laterfound tobe positive for CDV by direct immunofluore...

Exposure of pampas fox (Pseudalopex gymnocercus) and crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) from the Southern region of Brazil to Canine distemper virus (CDV), Canine parvovirus (CPV) and Canine coronavirus (CCoV)

The exposure of 13 Brazilian free-ranging nondomestic canids (five pampas fox Pseudalopex gymnocercus and eight crab-eating fox -Cerdocyon thous) from Southern region of Brazil, to Canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV) and Canine coronavirus (CCoV) was investigated. Antibodies against CDV were detected in 38.5% (5/13) of the samples. There were anti-CDV antibodies in 60% (3/5) o...
